International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer; 16 September

International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer to be observed today Today is World Ozone day, the International Day for the preservation of the Ozone Layer is being observed today. The day marks the commemoration of the date of signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1987 on substances that deplete the Ozone layer. It is mainly intended to spread awareness of the depletion of the Ozone Layer and search for solutions to preserve it. This year, the theme for the Day is 'Caring for all life under the sun'. The Ozone layer is a fragile shield of gas which protects the Earth from the harmful ultraviolet radiation of the sun and thus helping preserve life on the planet. Substances like Chlorofluorocarbons, halons, Carbontetrachloride are responsible for ozone layer depletion. The principal aim of Montreal Protocol is to protect the ozone layer by taking measures to control total consumption of these chemicals. Nagaland launches Swachhata Sewa

Nagaland joined the rest of the country in launching Swachhata Sewa. In the state capital Kohima, a pledge was also taken to create a clean, healthy and new India. The countrywide programme will conclude on October 2. The Objective of this campaign is to create awareness on cleanliness, behaviour change and management of solid and liquid waste.

India launches 'Operation Insaniyat'

India has started Operation Insaniyat to provided assistance to Bangladesh in response to the humanitarian crisis being faced on account of the large influx of Rohingya refugees into that country from Myanmar. External Affairs Ministry in a statement said today that under it, relief material consisting of items including rice, pulses, sugar, salt, cooking oil, biscuits and mosquito nets will be provided to the affected people. The relief material will be delivered in multiple consignments, and the first tranche will be brought to Chittagong by an Indian Air Force plane today. The Ministry said, India has always responded readily and swiftly to any crisis in Bangladesh, in view of close ties of friendship between the people of India and Bangladesh. It said, India stands ready to provide any assistance required by Government of Bangladesh in this hour of need.

Goa hosts 36th National Games 2017

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on 13 September 2017 formally awarded the rights to host the 36th National Games to Goa. The announcement was made by the state sports minister Manohar Ajgaonkar. Ajgaonkar said that IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta, in a letter to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, had formally conferred the rights to the state to host the sporting event in November 2017.  

National Hindi day

Hindi day is being celebrated across the country today. It was on this day in 1949 that the Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi written in Devanagari script as the official language of the country. President Ram Nath Kovind will give away Rajbhasha awards for the Year 2016-17 at a function in New Delhi. The Rajbhasha awards were instituted by the Department of Official Language of Home Ministry to recognize the excellent contribution of Ministries, Departments and Nationalized Banks in the field of Hindi. Home Minister Rajnath Singh has stressed on the need for more and more use of Hindi language in official works. In his address on the occasion of Hindi Divas, Mr Singh appealed to the heads of all the Central Ministries, Departments, Offices and Banks to use Hindi language in their official works as well as in their daily works. New and first female President for Singapore

Singapore will get a new President today. Halimah Yacob will be sworn-in today and will become the country’s first female President and the first in five decades to come from the Malay ethnicity. On Monday, Yacob was certified by the Presidential Elections Commission as the only eligible candidate, and since she has no opponent, there will be no election. The United Nations Security Council to hold today

The United Nations Security Council will hold a closed-door session today on the violence in the Rakhine state of Myanmar. The meeting was requested by Britain and Sweden. The exodus from Rakine state began after Rohingya militants attacked police posts on the 25th of last month, prompting a military backlash that forced nearly 3 lakh 70,000 Rohingya Muslims to flee their homes. Last week, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres wrote a letter to the Council urging members to send a message to Myanmar authorities to end the security operation. Two leading human rights groups, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, have slammed the Council for inaction over the crisis. They deplored the Council's failure to speak out and demand an end to the violence.

Los Angeles to host 2028 Olympics

Los Angeles will host the 2028 Olympics. The evaluation commission of International Olympic Committee, IOC gave the formal go ahead to its bid yesterday. Today, the full IOC will award the 2024 Games to Paris and the 2028 Games to Los Angeles. Los Angeles had originally bid for 2024, but because of the new date, it had to make changes to its host contract.The evaluation commission said that although details need to be finalised, it is confident LA can host Olympics in 2028.

RBI to introduce Rs 100 Coin

The Reserve Bank of India, RBI will introduce 100 rupees coin to mark the birth centenary of AIADMK founder Late Dr M G Ramachandran. Finance Ministry has issued notification in this regard. On the obverse, the face of the coin will bear Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the centre with Satyamev Jayate inscribed below on it in Devnagari script. It will also bear the rupee symbol and denominational value of 100.On the reverse side, the portrait of Dr MG Ramachandran will be in the centre. The standard weight of the coin will be 35 grams. RBI will also issue 5 rupees coin to mark the birth centenary of Dr M G Ramachandran.

Rafael Nadal wins men's US Open title over Kevin Anderson Rafael Nadal won his third US Open and 16th Grand Slam title with a one-sided victory over South Africa's Kevin Anderson in New York. The world number one powered to a 6-3 6-3 6-4 victory in Sunday's final at Flushing Meadows. Martina Hingis, Chan Yung-Jan wins US Open Women's doubles title

Switzerland's Martina Hingis and Taiwan's Chan Yung-Jan won the US Open women's doubles title tonight, when they rolled past the Czech partnership of Lucie Hradecka and Katerina Siniakova 6-3 6-2. It was the first grand slam title for Chan but the second in as many days for Hingis, who won the mixed doubles with Britain's Jamie Murray on Saturday. The victory took Hingis's career grand-slam tally to 25, including five singles titles, 13 doubles and seven mixed doubles. Hingis and Chan stormed through the draw without dropping a set and in the final did not face a breakpoint as they simply overwhelmed Hradecka and Siniakova.

India win 2nd SABA U-16 Championship

India has won 2nd South Asian Basketball, SABA, Under - 16 Championship. India defeated Bhutan by 131-50 in its last league match at Kathmandu yesterday. India remained unbeaten in its all four matches and accumulated 8 points. Bangladesh finished second and host Nepal third. The championship was played on a round robin league format. India has now qualified for 2017 International Basketball Federation, FIBA, Under-16 Asian Championship to be played in Malaysia later this year.

Sloane Stephens lifts US Open women's singles title

Unseeded American Sloane Stephens lifted the US Open women's singles title. Sloane ranked 83rd completed a spectacular return from injury to beat 15th seed Keys 6-3, 6-0 in the finals. The 24-year-old was ranked as low as 957th six weeks ago went on to become only the fifth unseeded woman to win a major title in the Open era. Sloane stunned Venus Williams in the semifinal. Top seed Rafael Nadal will start as a strong favourite when he takes on South Africa's Kevin Anderson in US Open men's singles final late tonight. The Spaniard, bidding for a 16th Grand Slam title, will play in his 23rd major final, but Anderson is making his debut in a Slam final. In the women's doubles, the Swiss-Taiwanese duo of Martina Hingis and Chan Yung-Jan will face Lucie Hradecká and Kateřina Siniaková of Czech Republic for the title tonight.
