India, Ethiopia sign agreements on trade, communication

India and Ethiopia today signed agreements on trade, communication and media to boost bilateral ties. The agreements were signed after wide ranging talks between President Ram Nath Kovind and his Ethiopian counterpart Mulatu Teshome at Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. The two leaders discussed economic relations between the two countries and also support to Ethiopia in the power healthcare, and education sectors. In a series of tweets, Mr Kovind said, India has created jobs and contributed to the prosperity of Ethiopia. He referred to India as among the top three sources of foreign direct investment for Ethiopia. The President also thanked Ethiopia for its participation in the International Solar Alliance (ISA), established in 2015. The aim of the ISA is to provide a dedicated platform for cooperation among solar resource-rich countries and promote the use of solar energy.

First ASEAN India Music Festival to be held at Purana Qila today

The first ever ASEAN-India Music Festival will be held at Purana Quila in New Delhi today. The 3 day festival is being organised by External Affairs Ministry in collaboration with Culture Ministry to celebrate the 25th year anniversary of ASEAN-India Dialogue Relations. The Festival aims to boost cultural influences among the peoples of the ASEAN member states and India. It will witness eclectic performances by musicians from ASEAN countries' bands such as The Ugly Band, Cherpen, Tim De Cotta, Red Bamboo among others. Famous Indian bands like the Raghu Dixit Project, Avial, Papon LIVE, Bipul Chettri and the Travelling Band, and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy will also participate in the festival. There will be no entry fee for the mega music event.

Kazuo Ishiguro wins the Nobel prize in literature

British author Kazuo Ishiguro has won the 2017 Nobel Prize for Literature.  The novelist was praised by the Swedish Academy as a writer "who, in novels of great emotional force, has uncovered the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world". He has written eight books, which have been translated into over 40 languages. His most famous novels "The Remains of the Day" and "Never Let Me Go" were adapted into highly acclaimed films. He was made an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1995.

Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson win Nobel Prize for chemistry. Scientists Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson have won the Nobel Chemistry Prize on Wednesday for the development of cryo-electron microscopy . It’s a method of simplifying and improving the imaging of biomolecules. Rajnish Kumar appointed as SBI Chairman

Managing Director of State Bank of India (SBI), Rajnish Kumar has been appointed as the next chairman of the largest public sector bank. He receives the charge from Arundhati Bhattacharya. Her term will end on Friday. Mr. Kumar's appointment was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet for a period of three years.

Tourism Ministry to organise Paryatan Parv

Tourism Ministry will organise Paryatan Parv from tomorrow. The parv is being organised with the objective of drawing focus on the benefits of tourism, showcasing the cultural diversity of the country and reinforcing the principle of Tourism for All. Crafts bazaar, food court, classical dance music, handicrafts and handlooms and cuisines from all the states will the main highlights of the Paryatan Parv.

2017 Nobel prize in physics awarded for discovery of gravitational waves

Rainer Weiss, Kip Thorne and Barry Barish will share the nine million kronor prize. The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to three US scientists for the detection of gravitational waves. Rainer Weiss, Kip Thorne and Barry Barish will share the nine million kronor prize. The ripples were predicted by Albert Einstein and are a fundamental consequence of his General Theory of Relativity. The winners are members of the Ligo-Virgo observatories, which were responsible for the breakthrough. October 2: 148th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi

The nation offers homage to Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi on his 148th birth anniversary today. Every year, the nation pays homage to Mahatma Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who was lovely called  Bapu , on his birth anniversary on October 2, which is also known as Gandhi Jayanti.  Born in 1869 in Gujarat's Porbandar , Mahatma Gandhi had his early political training in South Africa while working among the local Indian community facing discrimination. October 2 is also the birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri, the second prime minister of the country. He had given the famous slogan  'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan'  (Hail the Soldier, Hail the Farmer). Haryana government has decided to observe Gandhi Jayanti as International Day of Non-Violence in the state.

1 October: International Day of Older Persons

International Day of Older Persons “Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talents, Contributions and Participation of Older Persons in Society.” The theme of the 2017 International Day of Older Persons is about enabling and expanding the contributions of older people in their families, communities and societies at large. It focuses on the pathways that support full and effective participation in old age, in accordance with old persons’ basic rights, needs and preferences.

President inaugurates Shirdi Airport in Ahmednagar

President Ramnath Kovind today inaugurated the Shirdi airport in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. President also flagged off the inaugural flight of Alliance Air from Shirdi to Mumbai.The flight will take around 45 minutes. Besides Alliance Air, two other Airlines will be operating flights between Mumbai and Shirdi. The airport will initially have four flights to Mumbai and one each from Delhi and Hyderabad. Mr Kovind will also participate in the inauguration of Centenary celebrations of Samadhi of Shri Saibaba at Shirdi. President will later proceed to Mumbai where he will attend a function to declare Urban Maharashtra as open defecation free.

China marks 68th National Day

China today marked the 68th anniversary of the founding of People's Republic of China. More than 115,000 people from across China gathered at the Tiananmen Square at the heart of Beijing to watch the raising of the National Flag. At the backdrop was a 17-meter-tall giant display in the shape of a floral basket, which symbolizes a thriving and prosperous country. The National Day is celebrated with a week-long holiday.
