NASA’s latest planet-hunting probe completes lunar flyby NASA's latest planet-hunting satellite has successfully completed a lunar flyby, passing about 8,000 kilometres from the Moon, and beamed back a test image revealing more than 200 thousand stars. The flyby provided a gravity assist that helped the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) sail toward its final working orbit. As part of camera commissioning, the science team snapped a two-second test exposure using one of the four TESS cameras. The image, centred on the southern constellation Centaurus, reveals more than 200,000 stars. Launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on April 18, TESS is the next step in NASA's search for planets outside our solar system, known as exoplanets.

The California-based aerospace company, SpaceX has blasted off its most powerful Falcon 9 rocket, which is certified to carry humans to space later this year. The Block 5 Falcon 9 rocket's main goal for its maiden mission is to propel the first high-orbit communications satellite for Bangladesh, called Bangabandhu Satellite-1 . The Block 5 Falcon 9 is eventually meant to carry astronauts to the International Space Station, with the first launch tentatively planned for December 2018. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said the rocket is built to re-fly up to 10 times with minimal refurbishment.

On Tuesday, Feb. 6th, Falcon Heavy successfully lifted off from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Spacex's Falcon Heavy is the most powerful operational rocket in the world by a factor of two, with the ability to lift into orbit nearly 64 metric tons (141,000 lb)--a mass greater than a 737 jetliner loaded with passengers, crew, luggage and fuel. Excitonium Scientists have proven the existence of new form of matter called excitonium - which was first theorised almost 50 years ago. Researchers of University of California and University of Illinois studied non-doped crystals of a transition metal— dichalcogenide titanium diselenide (1T-TiSe2). Excitonium- particles that are formed in a very strange quantum mechanical pairing.

Indian Space Research Organization ISRO has scheduled its next satellite launch on the 31st of this month. A release from the national space agency has said it would put into orbit the IRNSS-1H satellite at 18:59 hours on the day using the rocket PSLV-C39 from Sriharikotta. The release has further said, the payload would augment the capacity of India’s seven-satellite ‘NavIC’ constellation in space. The NavIC constellation provides spatial information on moving and non-moving objects in and around the country. It is considered to be the Indian equivalent of the GPS or the Glonass. The first satellite in the series, IRNSS-1A developed a technical snag earlier, as its rubidium atomic clock failed in space. The latest satellite is expected to take up the mantle of the first payload in the series after its launch.

Scientists develops artificial womb to save premature babies. Scientists have developed an artificial womb that has been successfully used to incubate healthy baby lambs for a week, an advance that may one day be able to save the lives of extremely premature human babies. The research, published in The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, showed that preterm lambs were successfully maintained in a healthy, infection-free condition with significant growth, for a period of one week using ex- vivo uterine environment (EVE) therapy. The research was carried out by the Researchers from the University of Western Australia and Tohoku University Hospital in Japan. Associate professor at the University of Western Australia, Matt Kemp, said with further development, EVE therapy could prevent the severe morbidity suffered by extremely premature infants by potentially offering a medical technology that does not currently exist. Indian-origin researchers in the US have developed a mechanism to differentiate genuine and fake products. The mechanism uses algorithms and a smartphone to detect counterfeit products. Researchers of New York University in the US said, sale of counterfeit products is an estimated seven percent of the world trade. The new mechanism provides a non-intrusive solution to easily distinguish authentic versions of a product and fake versions. It's accuracy is more than 98 per cent, said Professor L. Subramanian of the New York University.

Aug 11,  7:55 AM NASA's Cassini spacecraft is set to begin its final five ultra-close orbits around Saturn, before the probe plunges into the atmosphere of the ringed planet and ends its epic 20-year-long journey. The spacecraft will enter new territory in its final mission phase, the Grand Finale, making the first of the five passes over Saturn on August 13. The spacecraft's point of closest approach to Saturn during these passes will be between about 1,630 and 1,710 kilometres above Saturn's cloud tops.
