International Day for Disaster Reduction, held every 13 October, celebrates how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters. The 2017 edition continues under the "Sendai Seven" campaign, centred on the seven targets of the Sendai Framework. This year's focus is Target B: Reducing the number of affected people by disasters by 2030. International Day for Disaster Reduction encourages every individual, community and government to take part in building more disaster resilient communities and nations.

Nisha Desai Biswal appointed as president of USIBC

Nisha Desai Biswal, former Indian-American assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asia has been appointed as the new president of US India Business Council (USIBC) . Biswal was the assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asia, in which capacity she spearheaded the India and South Asia policy of the previous Obama Administration. USIBC said yesterday that she will join the US Chamber beginning October 23.

Anupam Kher appointed as new chairman of FTII

Veteran actor Anupam Kher has been appointed as the new chairman of Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. He will replace Gajendra Chauhan. Mr Kher who has appeared in over 500 films is a recipient of the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan for his contribution in the field of cinema and arts. The veteran star has won many national and international awards including the ‘Filmfare Award five times.

IIT Kharagpur signs MoU with Samsung for digital academy

IIT-Kharagpur has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Samsung India for the setting up of a digital academy on the institute’s campus. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the institute would host the Samsung Innovation Lab and train students on the Internet of Things (IoT) through Tizen-based operating systems, commonly used by the company for its mobile phones and home appliances.

2017 Nobel prize in economics awarded to Richard Thaler

The Nobel economics prize has been awarded to Richard Thaler of the University of Chicago for his contributions to behavioural economics. Swedish Academy of Sciences Secretary Goeran Hansson said today that the 9-million-kronor (1.1 million US Dollars) prize was awarded to the academic for his understanding the psychology of economics. 72 years old Thaler, is a pioneer in behavioural economics, a research field in which insights from psychological research are applied to economic decision making, a background paper from the academy said.

Aleksandra Chichikova BECOMES FIRST MISS WHEELCHAIR WORLD

A student from Belarus has been crowned Miss Wheelchair World at the inaugural beauty pageant which took place in Warsaw, Poland on Saturday. Aleksandra Chichikova, who studies psychology and social pedagogy, was awarded first prize ahead of runner-up Lebohang Monyatsi (South Africa) in the global competition, which involved 24 female contestants from 19 different countries.

9 October; World Post Day

World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9 October, the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union in 1874 in the Swiss Capital, Bern. It was declared World Post Day by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan in 1969. Since then, countries across the world participate annually in the celebrations. The Posts in many countries use the event to introduce or promote new postal products and services.

Indian Air Force celebrates 85th anniversary

The Indian Air Force is celebrating its 85th anniversary today. The main function was held at the Hindon air base near Delhi with parade and air display. Speaking at the ceremony, Air Chief Marshal B S Dhanoa said, the Air Force is prepared to fight at short notice, if the need arises. He said security of all Air Force stations have been enhanced to combat any threat, including sub-conventional threats, after the terrorist attack on the IAF base station in Pathankot last year. The Air Chief said the Force is committed to Make in India and indigenisation efforts in defence sector. He also paid tribute to the Marshal of the force Arjan Singh who passed away recently.
