World Rabies Day

World Rabies Day 28 September is World Rabies Day It is celebrated annually to raise awareness about rabies prevention and to highlight progress in defeating this horrifying disease. 28 September also marks the anniversary of Louis Pasteur's death, the French chemist and microbiologist, who developed the first rabies vaccine. Today, safe and efficacious animal and human vaccines are among the important tools that exist to eliminate human deaths from rabies while awareness is the key driver for success of communities to engage in effective rabies prevention. 2017 – Zero by 30 World Rabies Day 2017 marks the announcement of the biggest global anti-rabies initiative. Today, the World Health Organization, the World Organisation for Animal Health, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Global Alliance for Rabies Control will reveal an ambitious plan to end human deaths from dog-transmitted rabies by 2030.

Joao Lourenco is the new president of Angola

Joao Lourenco has been sworn in as president of Angola, becoming the first new leader in the oil-rich southern African nation in almost four decades. Lourenco, 63, took over on Tuesday from Jose Eduardo dos Santos, who ruled the former Portuguese colony for 38 years. The Portuguese news agency Lusa reports that Lourenco's party - the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola - won 61 percent of the vote in August. Chief Executive of Afghanistan Abdullah to arrive in New Delhi tonight

The Chief Executive of Afghanistan, Dr Abdullah Abdullah will arrive in New Delhi tonight on a three-day visit to India. He was scheduled to arrive this afternoon but his flight was delayed due to rocket attack on Kabul's international airport. Dr Abdullah will meet External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tomorrow. The visiting dignitary will also call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind.

INS TARASA commissioned into Indian Navy

Vice Admiral Girish Luthra, CnC Western Naval Command, commissioned INS TARASA into the Indian Navy, at a function organized at the naval dockyard in Mumbai today. CMD of Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers V. K Saxena was present on this occasion. The Kalvari submarine is delivered after spending 110 days at sea doing various trials, and is expected to be commissioned by coming December.

US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis arrives in New Delhi

US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis arrives in New Delhi on a two-day visit; says India is pillar of stability and security in region. The US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis arrives in New Delhi last night on a two day visit to India beginning today. Mattis said for US, India is clearly a pillar of regional stability and security. He praised New Delhi for supporting the fight against terrorists in Afghanistan. Today, the US Defence Secretary will meet Defence Minister of India Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi to discuss on the broader issues and both will also deliver a press statements at South Block. Mr Mattis is the first Cabinet Minister of the Trump Administration to visit India.

PM launches Pradhan Mantri Saubhagya Yojana

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today launched the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana, or Saubhagya, at New Delhi. The aim of this scheme is to provide power to all homes. On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay, the Prime Minister also dedicated a new ONGC building - the Deendayal Urja Bhawan.  The  Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana , which would provide power connections to all the estimated four crore households which currently did not have a power connection. The outlay for this scheme would be over Rs. 16000 crore. These connections would be provided free of cost, the Prime Minister said.

Angela Merkel wins 4th term as Chancellor of Germany

Chancellor Angela Merkel clinched a fourth term in Germany's election while exit polls also predicted the historic entry of the hard-right nationalist party, AfD, in the national parliament by winning its first seats. According to the exit polls, Merkel, who after 12 years in power held a double-digit lead for most of the campaign, scored around 33 per cent of the vote with her conservative Christian Union (CDU-CSU) bloc. Its nearest rivals, the Social Democrats and their candidate Martin Schulz, came in a distant second, with a post-war record low 20-21 per cent.  

Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games: Wrestler Bajrang wins gold

In Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, Indian wrestler Bajrang beat Daichi Takatani of Japan in the men's freestyle 65kg final to win the gold today. Indians added four medals including a gold on the ninth day of the games at Ashgabat in Turkmenistan today. Two women wrestlers Sheetal Tomar and Navjot Kaur also grabbed a bronze each. Krishnan Sasikiran won the third bronze in men's standard individual chess. India now stands at 12th place in the medals tally with 6 gold, 7 silver and 11 bronze.

Belgian Junior badminton title 2017

Vaishnavi Jakka Reddy clinches Belgian Junior badminton title. Indian shuttler Vaishnavi Reddy has clinched the women's singles Under-19 title at the Belgian Junior Open badminton tournament. She defeated top seed Vivien Sandorhazi in a three-game final at Herstal, Belgium today. Second seed Reddy saw off Vivien 21-19, 17-21, 21-12 in a 42-minute summit clash at the Hall Omnisport La Prealle. At Ethiopia International, top seeded Indian duo of Arjun MR and Ramchandran Shlok won men's doubles title. In the final at the Ethiopian Youth Academy Gymnasium Hall, the duo defeated Jordanian pair of Bahaedeen Ahmad Alshannik and Mohd Naser Mansour in straight games 21-6, 21-19.

57th National Open Athletics begins in Chennai today

The 57th National Open Athletics Championships 2017 will begin at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai today. Around 1200 athletes from various states and departments/public sector undertakings would be taking part in the four-day meet. According to Tamil Nadu Athletics Association (TNAA) officials, the participants include the country's top track and field athletes. The focus would be on Govindan Lakshmanan and javelin thrower Davinder Singh Kang. Lakshmanan recently won a gold in Asian Indoor Games in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, after capturing two gold in the Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubneswar. Davinder Singh Kang qualified for the final round at the World Championships in London recently. Apart from representing state teams, numerous athletes would be participating on behalf of their institutions. Mary Kom to be AIBA representative at IOC athletes' forum

Five-time world champion and Olympic bronze-medallist M C Mary Kom has become the first Indian to be picked as the International Boxing Association's (AIBA) representative for the IOC Athletes' Forum scheduled in November. The 33-year-old, who is also an active parliamentarian, has been invited to attend the 8th International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Athletes' Forum in Lausanne from November 11th to 13th. AIBA has sent an invitation letter to the Boxing Federation of India , in this regard. The event, however, overlaps with the Asian Championship in Vietnam, which is scheduled from November 2 to 12. Seven states of Northeast India to launch Mission Indradhanush

With the aim to ensure full immunization with all available vaccines for children up to two years and pregnant women under Universal Immunisation Programme by 2018, seven states of Northeast India will launch Mission Indradhanush, a flagship immunization scheme of the Government of India from 7th of next month. The Mission Indradhanush will be launched in Sikkim, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. This was informed during the Media Sensitization Workshop on Intensified Mission Indradhanush for North East States, organized by Regional Resource Centre for North East States (RRC-NE) and UNICEF today in Guwahati.
