BCCI released '100 things every professional cricketer must know' handbook

The book titled '100 things every professional cricketer must know', was released. The Board of Control for Cricket in India ( BCCI) released its first ever players handbook in New Delhi today. The book titled '100 things every professional cricketer must know', was released by the Committee of Administrators (COA) and is in line with the recommendations of the Lodha panel. The document will be the official handbook for all the cricketers registered with the BCCI. The book, foreworded by former India captain Rahul Dravid, has 10 sections covering topics ranging from money management to injury management. It also touches upon the importance of eating right, having knowledge about your own body, how to handle mental and emotional hardship, having knowledge about legal and commercial obligations, dealing with the media and professional integrity.

International Literacy Day observed today

Today is International Literacy Day. The day is observed every year on 8th September to emphasize the importance of literacy to individuals, society and communities. The theme of this year's International Literacy Day, is ‘Literacy in a Digital World’. A special two-day event will be organized at UNESCO’s Headquarters in Paris today, with an overall aim to look at what kind of literacy skills people need to navigate increasingly in the digitally-mediated societies. The 2017 UNESCO International Literacy Prizes awards ceremony will also take place to recognize and reward excellent literacy practices from around the world in connection with this year’s theme. AIR correspondent reports that in India, the National Literacy Mission Authority has planned several functions. The programme at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi would include felicitation of to dignitaries and conferring of the Saakshar Bharat Awards. India & Japan agree to collaborate in defence production

India and Japan have agreed to collaborate closely in defence production, including on dual-use technologies. The two countries resolved to ramp up overall military engagement under the bilateral special strategic framework. A joint press statement said, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley and his Japanese counterpart Itsunori Onodera held wide-ranging talks, as part of the India-Japan annual defence ministerial dialogue in Tokyo during which issues relating to the US-2 amphibious aircraft also figured. The decision by India and Japan to boost defence ties comes amid escalating tension in the region in the wake of the nuclear test by North Korea and China's growing assertiveness in the South China Sea. The two sides also agreed to ramp up counter-terror cooperation, besides deepening engagement among navies, air forces and ground forces of the two countries.

Nirmala Sitharaman as new Defence Minister

The country's first full-time woman Defence Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman has said, her priority will be the preparedness of the Armed forces. Talking to reporters after taking charge of the Ministry today, Mrs Sitharaman said it is important that the armed forces receive all attention in terms of best equipment to discharge their duties. She said, priority will also be given to indigenous defence production as part of the 'Make in India' initiative. The Minister also said, the long pending issues of the Armed forces will be resolved. Mrs Sitharaman took charge from Mr Arun Jaitley who was holding the additional charge of the Ministry since March this year. Duleep Trophy Cricket tournament to begin today

Duleep Trophy cricket tournament will begin today in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. India Green will take on the India Red in the opening encounter at the newly constructed International Cricket stadium. AIR Correspondent reports that after a gap of almost 12 years State Capital is now going to witness a Big Cricket tournament like Duleep Trophy and that too in its first international cricket stadium with pink cricket ball and flood lights on. Gujarat Govt- Amul sign MoU

Gujarat Govt- Amul sign MoU to save children of anganwadi from malnutrition. Gujarat Government and Gujarat Milk Marketing Federation-Amul have signed the Memorandum of Understanding to save the children of anganwadi from malnutrition. The MoU was signed in the the presence of Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. According to the MOU, under the ‘Take Home Ration’, district dairies in cooperation with the Gujarat milk marketing federation will provide nutritive foods to more than 42-lakh children of more than 53 thousand Anaganwadis, pregnant-mothers, lactating mothers and young girls.

Jharkhand Governor gives assent to Religious Freedom Bill-2017

Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu has given assent to the Jharkhand Religious Freedom Bill-2017 along with Land Acquisition Bill-2017. She approved both the bills yesterday. The state government will now issue notification on the Religious Freedom Bill, after which it will become an Act, while Land Acquisition Bill will be sent before the President of India for final approval. Both the Bills were passed by the State Assembly last month during Monsoon session.

Hurricane Irma hits several French islands territories in Caribbean

Hurricane Irma has destroyed buildings and caused major flooding on several French island territories in the Caribbean. French Interior Minister Gérard Collomb said, the four most solid buildings on Saint Martin, shared by France and the Netherlands were destroyed. Communications between Paris and Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy are down. The category five hurricane, the highest possible level, has sustained wind speeds reaching 300 kms per hour. The most powerful Atlantic storm in a decade first hit Antigua and Barbuda, before moving on to Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy - both French overseas territories.

NITI Aayog launches National Nutrition Strategy

NITI Aayog has launched the National Nutrition Strategy aimed at Kuposhan Mukt Bharat. It intends at bringing nutrition to the centre-stage of the National Development Agenda. It lays the roadmap for targeted action to address India's nutritional needs. Leader of the Green Revolution, Dr M S Swaminathan and Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog Dr Rajiv Kumar yesterday launched the Nutrition Strategy in New Delhi. Our correspondent reports that the nutrition strategy calls for convergence between four proximate determinants of nutrition - food, health services, income and water. The Nutrition Strategy framework envisages a Kuposhan Mukt Bharat - linked to Swachh Bharat and Swasth Bharat. It enables states to make strategic choices, through decentralized planning and local innovation, with accountability for nutrition outcomes. Currently, there is a lack of real time measurement of these determinants, which reduces the capacity for targeted action among the most vulnerable mothers and childre...

Formerly Indian Coast Guard Ship Varuna handed over to Sri Lanka Coast Guard

Varuna, formerly an Indian Coast Guard Ship was formally handed over to Sri Lanka Coast Guard today at Kochi. The ship was handed over by Rajendra Singh, Director General of Indian Coast Guard at a colourful function held at Kochi Naval Base. Rear Admiral Samanta Wimalatunge , Director General of Sri Lanka Cast Guard, received the ship on behalf of Sri Lankan Navy. The ship was decommissioned in Aug 23 this year and was part of India Coast Guard for the last thirty years. Initially the ship was operated from the base port Mumbai and then re-based to Kochi.

Third Eastern Economic Forum

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today arrived in Russian port city of Vladivostok on a three-day visit to attend the third Eastern Economic Forum which will deliberate on pressing issues relating to global trade. She will also hold bilateral talks with her Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov during which various issues relating to trade, investment and defence cooperation are likely to figure. Swaraj is visiting Russia at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Yury Trutnev. The Eastern Economic Forum is considered as the biggest international communication platform for cooperation between businesses leaders and senior government representatives from Russia, the Pacific Region and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Delegates from at least 24 countries including the US, Japan, China, Australia, Canada, Britain and Germany are attending the gathering.

Today is Teacher's Day.

Today is Teacher's Day. The day is observed to commemorate the birth anniversary of academician, statesman and philosopher Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan who was the second President and first Vice President of India. President, Vice President and Prime Minister have greeted teachers on the occasion of Teacher's Day. In his message, President Ram Nath Kovind said, India has a warm tradition of the Guru Shishya parampara by which teachers impart their knowledge to students and empower them. He said, it is the moral responsibility of all to pay respect and regard to teachers, as they are role models who guide children to become good and productive human beings.

"I Do What I Do" Raghuram Rajan's new book is being released

Exactly a year after leaving the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as its governor, Raghuram Rajan is coming out with a new book containing his commentary and speeches. According to HarperCollins India, which is the publisher of the book, it would offer “a front-row view” of his tenure at the central bank in “those turbulent but exciting times”. The book is titled  I Do What I Do . Rajan had said in his last days at the RBI that he won’t be engaging in public discourse for a year after leaving the central bank. The book is being launched after completion of that period. It would be formally launched in Chennai on September 5 and then in New Delhi and Mumbai. The book takes its name from Rajan’s famous quote on September 29, 2015 policy, when the RBI had cut rates by half a percentage point, surprising many. Raghuram G. Rajan in 2004 was the 23rd Governor of Reserve Bank of India.  

Konsam Ormila Devi bags gold at Commonwealth Youth weightlifting C'ship

India's Konsam Ormila Devi bagged a gold medal in 44kg weight category on the opening day of the Commonwealth Youth (boys & girls) weightlifting championships, held at Gold Coast, Australia. Ormila lifted 57kg in snatch and 76kg in clean and jerk for an overall effort of 133kg, to finish on the top of the podium. With this effort, Ormila has registered her best lift so far.

Iran tests home-grown air defence system: Official

Iran has tested its home-grown air defence system, designed to match the Russian S-300. Iran's head of the Revolutionary Guards' air defence, Farzad Esmaili told state media that Bavar-373 system is made completely in Iran and some of its parts are different from the S-300. He said all of its sub-systems have been completed and its missile tests have been conducted. Esmaili said Bavar (which means "belief") is Tehran's first long-range missile defence system, and is set to be operational by March 2018. In 2010, Iran began manufacturing Bavar-373 after the purchase of the S-300 from Russia was suspended due to international sanctions.

Five banks of BRICS nations sign pact for credit lines

Five banks of the BRICS Bank Cooperation Mechanism have agreed to establish credit lines in the national currencies and cooperate on credit ratings. The agreement to this effect was signed yesterday ahead of the BRICS Summit in China’s Xiamen city. Brazilian Development Bank, Vnesheconombank, Export-Import Bank of India, China Development Bank and Development Bank of South Africa signed the agreement in Beijing yesterday. The Chinese official said the decision was taken in order to strengthen further cooperation. The agreement on credit ratings enables them to share information about internal credit ratings and rating assessment. Ahead of the BRICS summit, the New Development Bank (NDB) of the BRICS countries has approved 1.4 billion US dollar loans for sustainable development projects in India, Russia and China. For India, the Bank has approved 470 million US dollars loan for Madhya Pradesh’s Multi-Village Rural Drinking Water Supply Scheme Project.

MS Dhoni becomes first wicketkeeper to effect 100 stumpings in ODI Cricket

Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today became the first wicketkeeper in world cricket to effect 100 stumpings in One Day Internationals. Dhoni achieved the feat in his 301st ODI in Colombo today when he whipped off the bails to remove Sri Lankan batsman Akila Dananjaya off leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal's bowling. 36-year-old Dhoni has also taken 281 catches apart from scoring 9,657 runs so far. Dhoni played 90 Tests and 77 T20 Internationals as well. In 90 Tests, Dhoni has taken 256 catches and effected 38 stumpings. In T20 Internationals, Dhoni has taken 43 catches and affected 23 stumpings.

Tropical storm Lidia hit Mexico

The death toll from Tropical Storm Lidia that swept across Mexico's Baja California peninsula has risen to seven. Officials said five of the deaths occurred at the resort town of Cabo San Lucas. According to the United States' National Hurricane Center, Lidia is advancing over the peninsula, home to a swank strip of beach resorts, with maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometres per hour. It is expected to weaken throughout the day and become a tropical depression. Mexico is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to hurricanes due to its location and wide coastlines, both in the Pacific and in the Atlantic.
