Agri Ministry to celebrate "Sankalp to Siddhi"

Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Ministry will celebrate Sankalp to Siddhi- New India Manthan in all the districts of the country from Saturday to 30th of this month. Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh has written a letter to the Ministers and all the MPs, to be present in the programs. Mr Singh today held an audio conferencing with all the Vice chancellors of University and heads of Krishi Vigyan Kendras across the country. Mr Singh said that this program will last for two and a half hours in which the first video message of the Prime Minister to be shown. The Minister said after that, a film will be shown on the efforts being made by the government for agricultural development and the resolution will be taken to free the country from poverty, corruption, terrorism, communalism and casteism.

Prasoon Joshi as new CBFC chief

Pahlaj Nihalani has been replaced by lyricist Prasoon Joshi as the new Chairman of Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The Centre has appointed Mr Joshi as Chairman of the Board for a period of three years with immediate effect. Mr Nihalani has been in controversy over his decisions relating to cuts in different movies before giving the certificate.

Sushma Swaraj meets Bhutanese foreign minister

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today met her Bhutanese counterpart Damcho Dorji in Kathmandu on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC meet. There was no official word on as to what was discussed between the two leaders. The meeting comes in the backdrop of the current standoff in Dokalam - a trijunction between India, China and Bhutan. Both the leaders were in Kathmandu to attend a meeting of foreign ministers from the countries of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) , a grouping of countries in South Asia and South East Asia. Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan and Nepal are members of the BIMSTEC.

Economic Survey Volume II admits achieving 7.5% growth target for this fiscal as tough

The Economic Survey Volume two for the year 2016-17 was tabled today in Parliament. It said achieving the high end of the 6.75-7.5 per cent growth projected previously will be difficult due to appreciation of rupee, farm loan waivers and transitionary challenges from implementing GST. The survey, however, noticed a rekindled optimism on structural reforms in Indian economy riding on various factors such as launch of the GST; Positive impacts of demonetization; decision in principle to privatize Air India; further rationalization of energy subsidies and Actions to address the Twin Balance Sheet (TBS) challenge. The document also adds that a growing confidence that macro-economic stability has become entrenched is evident because of a series of government and RBI actions and because of structural changes in the oil market have reduced the risk of sustained price increases. Davinder Singh Kang becomes 1st Indian to qualify for javelin throw final in WAC

Davinder Singh Kang has become the first Indian to qualify for the final round of the javelin throw at the International Association of Athletics Federations World Athletics Championships (IAAF WAC) in London. Competing in the qualification round Group B yesterday, Kang, who was carrying a shoulder injury, cleared the automatic qualification mark of 83 meter in his third and final throw as he sent the iron spear to a distance of 84.22 meter. He had a 82.22m in his opening throw and then came up with 82.14m in his second. The 26-year-old athlete from Punjab was under pressure to touch the 83 m in his final attempt and he was the last man to take the throw. He did it in style by sending the spear beyond the qualification mark to the huge relief of the Indian camp. NASA's Cassini spacecraft set to begin its final five ultra-close orbits around Saturn

Aug 11,  7:55 AM NASA's Cassini spacecraft is set to begin its final five ultra-close orbits around Saturn, before the probe plunges into the atmosphere of the ringed planet and ends its epic 20-year-long journey. The spacecraft will enter new territory in its final mission phase, the Grand Finale, making the first of the five passes over Saturn on August 13. The spacecraft's point of closest approach to Saturn during these passes will be between about 1,630 and 1,710 kilometres above Saturn's cloud tops.

Venkaiah Naidu sworn-in as 13th Vice-President of India

Aug 11,  1:35 PM Former Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu was sworn-in as 13th Vice President of India today. He has been administered the oath of office by President Ram Nath Kovind at a special function at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Out going Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Governors, Chief Ministers, Union Ministers, Members of Parliament were present at the event. Mr Naidu, before proceeding to the Rashtrapati Bhavan paid tributes to the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat, Deen Dayal Upadhyay at DDU park and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at Patel Chowk. After the swearing in ceremony, Mr Naidu reached Parliament House and took charge as the Chairman of Rajya Sabha . He also chaired the proceedings of the Upper House. Mr. Naidu was elected as the Vice President on 5th of this month defeating opposition candidate Gopal Krishna Gandhi.

BWF Rankings Prannoy jumps to world no 15 in badminton ranking

Indian shuttler HS Prannoy today improved two places to reach the 15th spot in the latest BWF rankings. Prannoy, who clinched the US Open title last month, had reached the quarterfinals at New Zealand Grand Prix Gold at Auckland last week. Sourabh Verma, who also reached the quarters at New Zealand, also jumped five places to reach the 32nd spot while Parupalli Kashyap jumped one place to be 46th. Ajay Jayaram and Sameer Verma dropped a spot each. Ajay is now placed at world no 17 while Verma is at the 29th position. Kidambi Srikanth, who clinched successive titles at Indonesia and Australia, remained at the eighth spot. In women's singles, Olympics silver medallist PV Sindhu and London Games bronze winner Saina Nehwal continue in their same places. Sindhu is in the 5th spot while Saina remains at the16th spot.

Chess: Anand jumps to joint top position in Sinquefield Cup

Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand has jumped to the joint top position in the Sinquefield Cup, which is a part of the Grand Chess tour. In the seventh round of the competition at St Louis in the United States, Anand defeated Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia in a game that lasted 40 moves. The second straight victory with white pieces took Anand to 4.5 points from seven rounds. With just two rounds remaining in the Super tournament, the Indian ace shares the lead with overnight leader Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France and Levon Aronian of Armenia.

15th BIMSTEC ministerial meeting begins in Kathmandu

Prime Minister of Nepal Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that terrorism continues to be the greatest threat to peace, democracy, development and good neighborliness. Inaugurating the 15th BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting at Kathmandu this evening, Mr. Deuba said that Nepal firmly and unequivocally condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Parliament passes Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2017

Parliament has passed the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2017 with the Rajya Sabha approving it today. The Lok Sabha has already passed it. Replying to a debate on the Bill, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, the wilful defaulters will not be spared and prosecution s are being launched against them. He said, the government’s decision has shaken the defaulters and they have started rushing to banks to resolve the issue. AIR Correspondent reports, the bill seeks to amend the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 to insert provisions for handling cases related to stressed assets of banks. Stressed assets are loans where the borrower has defaulted in repayment or where the loan has been restructured. The bill will replace the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2017 which was promulgated on 4th of May this year. World Athletics Championships: Sam Kendricks wins men's pole vault title

At the World Athletics Championships in London, Sam Kendricks of the US has claimed the title of men's pole vault. Kendricks, who took bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics, cleared 5.95 meters for the gold. In women's javelin, two-time Olympic champion Barbora Spotakova of the Czech Republic lifted her second world championships title. 36 year old Spotakova, who last won the world title in 2007 in Osaka, set the gold medal mark at 66.76 metres in her second attempt.

India ratifies 2nd commitment period of Kyoto Protocol

India has ratified the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol that commits countries to contain the emission of greenhouse gases, reaffirming its stand on climate action. In a brief statement, India's Permanent Mission to the UN said that India deposited its Instrument of Acceptance of the Doha Amendment to the Kyoto Protocol under the UN Convention on Climate Change yesterday. With this, India became the 80th country to accept the amendment relating to the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, the international emissions reduction treaty. The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which commits its Parties by setting internationally binding emission reduction targets. The Protocol was adopted in Kyoto, Japan, in December 1997 and entered into force in February 2005. Centre launches Swachh Survekshan Gramin to encourage states, districts to improve sanitation coverage

The Centre has launched Swachh Survekshan Gramin to encourage states and districts to improve sanitation coverage and solid liquid waste management. Launching this in New Delhi, Rural Development Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said, toilet usage have increased to 91 per cent in the country whereas overall toilet coverage in rural India has reached to 66 per cent. Mr Singh said, all districts of the country will be ranked under the Swachh Survekshan Gramin on the basis of performance, sustainability and transparency. So far, 4,600 villages and 1.4 lakh households have been covered under Swachh Sarvekshan (Gramin) Survey. Mr Tomar informed that 160 districts have been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) and more than 2.2 lakh lakh villages are ODF so far. India finished the Asian Junior Boxing Championships in Puerto Princesa, Philippines today with two silver and six bronze medals. Satender Rawat and Mohit Khatana settled for silver medals after losing their final bouts in the Championships. Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to visit India this month on his first official trip overseas. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Krishna Bahadur Mahara was quoted as saying by The Himalayan Times that the agenda of Deuba's five-day visit from August 23 is under discussion. Leading bankers reviews progress on 12 large stressed accounts named by RBI resolution

Leading bankers reviewed the progress on the 12 large stressed accounts named by the Reserve Bank resolution for action under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) in Mumbai today. The Internal Advisory Committee (IAC) of the Central bank had on June 13 directed the banks to refer 12 non-performing accounts to the National Company Law Tribunal for possible liquidation process. According to one of the bankers present at the meeting, It was a stock-taking exercise to smoothen the co-ordination among all the stakeholders. He informed that the IAC has referred all accounts whose fund and non-fund based loans are greater than Rs 5,000 crore, with 60 per cent or more classified as non-performing assets by banks as of March 2016, to the NCLT.

Sebi directs bourses to act against 331 suspected shell companies

SEBI has directed bourses to initiate action against 331 suspected shell companies listed in the share markets. These scripts will not be available for trading from this month. The regulator's directive came after the corporate affairs ministry shared a list of 331 listed companies that are suspected to be shell entities and could even face "compulsory delisting". In a communication sent to the BSE, the NSE and the Metropolitan Stock Exchange, the markets regulator has asked them to keep the 331 shares in stage four of the Graded Surveillance Mechanism (GSM) with immediate effect. Securities coming in stage four are permitted to trade only once a month under trade to trade category. Forex reserves surge to record 392.867 bn

India's foreign exchange reserves have surged by 1(point)536 billion US Dollars to touch a fresh lifetime high of 392(point)867 billion dollars in the week ended 28th July 2017. An RBI release said that foreign currency assets, a major part of the overall reserves rose by 1.609 billion dollars to 368.759 billion dollars. In the previous week, the reserves had increased by 2.27 billion dollars to 391.33 billion dollars. Gold reserves remained unchanged at 20.35 billion dollars. UNESCO worried about world heritage Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

The UNESCO has cautioned that the damage caused to the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR)in the northern part of West Bengal due to the Gorkhaland agitation may put in peril the World Heritage tag it earned in 1999.  UNESCO Representative said: "The DHR heritage toy train is already very vulnerable, given the natural environmental surrounding and landslide and other disaster threats it faces. And now this social turmoil has added another layer of vulnerability to it," said Section Chief and Programme Specialist for Culture at UNESCO New Delhi Office Moe Chiba. She said, it is a heritage symbol of outstanding universal value and with all the damage caused to it during the strike, the World Heritage status enjoyed by it, may come up for review in the next World Heritage Committee meeting in 2018. Vijender offers to return title to Zulpikar in lieu of peace at Indo-China border

Indian Boxer Vijender Singh has offered to return his WBO Oriental Super Middleweight title to Chinese Zulpikar Maimaitiali in lieu of peace at the Indo-China border.  Vijender, a double champion in pro boxing, has urged both countries to maintain peace at the border. Indian shooter Ankur Mittal clinched the individual as well as the team gold medal in men's double trap at the 7th Asian Shotgun Championship today. Ankur Mittal wins gold in Asian Shotgun Championship

Indian shooter Ankur Mittal clinched the individual as well as the team gold medal in men's double trap at the 7th Asian Shotgun Championship today. At Astana, Kazakhstan, Mittal shot 71 in the six-man final to finish at the top of the podium. With scores of Sangram Dahiya and Mohammad Asab added to Mittal's final total, India managed to bag the top prize in the team event also. Dahiya had a score of 43 and Asab had shot 34. In the individual event, Dahiya finished fourth, while Asab had to be contend with the fifth position. Mittal had won a gold medal at the International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup in Acapulco, Mexico, earlier this year

Usain Bolt finishes 3rd in 100 meters Final at World Athletics C'ship

Fastest man on earth, Usain Bolt finished third in the 100 meters Final of World Athletics Championship at London, last night. Usain Bolt  finished third to Americans Justin Gatlin and Christian Coleman at the World Track and Field Championships, the Jamaican's final 100 meters race. Bolt clocked a time of 9.95 seconds. American sprinter Justin Gatlin who clocked 9.92 seconds to claim Gold.

Hassan Rouhani sworn in as Iran's president for second term

Iran's re-elected president Hassan Rouhani has been sworn in for his second term in an official ceremony held at the Iranian parliament in Tehran this evening. Iran's state TV reported that more than 130 high-ranking officials from various countries and international organisations attended the ceremony. Among them was EU's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, who coordinates follow-up of Iran's nuclear deal. Union Road, Transport, Highways and Shipping Minister Gadkari represented India at the oath taking ceremony .

Venkaiah Naidu will be the new Vice President of India, to take oath on 11th of August. Former Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu will be the new Vice President of India as he defeated Gopal Krishna Gandhi by 272 votes. Voting to elect the 13th Vice President was conducted today with 98.21 per cent polling recorded. There was a straight fight between NDA's candidate M Venkaiah Naidu and Opposition nominee Gopalkrishna Gandhi. Briefing media in New Delhi, Returning Officer Shemsher K Sharif said Mr Naidu received 516 votes against Gopalkrishna Gandhi's 244 votes.
