India today outclassed Sri Lanka by 304 runs in their opening Test at Galle, biggest overseas win in terms of runs, surpassing 279 run-victory against England at Leeds in 1986. For Sri Lanka, it was their biggest defeat in terms of runs, surpassing their 301-run loss against Pakistan in 1994.
Earlier, the hosts finished their second innings at 245 in 76.5 overs. This was after India captain Virat Kohli struck his 17th Test hundred with India declaring their second innings at 240 for three. India took a huge first innings lead of 309 runs when the hosts were all out for 291 in reply to India’s 600 yesterday. Shikhar Dhawan was declared the Man of the Match. Ravichandran Aswin was given a special award for playing his 50th Test.
